Once upon a time, there were seven bears who lived on a single iceberg, floating along the seas of uncertainty. The polar bears had never met before, but had only drifted past each other as they went about their everyday lives, trapped in their own space of preoccupation. One day, they bumped into each other, and fell. As they looked up, and gazed around them, they saw, as if for the first time, how white everything was, how pristine and quiet it seemed. They realized and began to explore how controlled their actions had to be on the iceberg, and they finally began to question why they could not live differently. Slowly but surely, they sought new meaning in their surroundings, and in themselves. Finally, the answer to the insistent question that secretly had plagued them for years and burned up their insides, came to them: enough to break the ice.Being an absurd and metaphorical question at the same time, ‘How Much Does A Polar Bear Weigh?’ questions the importance and the proprieties of a gallery space and one’s perceptions and experiences within it. With what weight and gravity do we treat a gallery space, and how much of that weight is determined by the artworks and our perceptions of them?

Prior to this exhibition, a formative workshop was held on 25th January 2014. The curator’s intentions of the workshop was to reach out to potential artists and physically immerse them within our curatorial concept, which was delivered through a series of lectures and activities, over the course of our 5-hour workshop. Participants and non-participants of the workshop were then invited to participate in the following exhibition with the respective knowledge and impressions that they have gathered about our project.
